St. Cecilia Schola Cantorum: 09/01/2003 - 10/01/2003 St. Cecilia Schola Cantorum
Sunday, September 28, 2003

The parish is holding a "mission" with a visiting priest, and it was requested that the Schola specifically handle the two crucial Benediction services: Sunday, November 2, and Tuesday, November 4. This is an exciting opportunity for us: the liturgy is beautiful, as we know, and also there is vast space for singing. We'll be employing tremendous amounts of our repertoire. More on this great news later. In the meantime, put it on the calendar. The services will probably begin at 7pm.

The Schola will assist at liturgy on the following dates, concluding the liturgical year: October 5th and 19th, November 2nd, 16th, and 30th.

St. Cecilia Children's Choir News

Our children's "Scholette, " made up primarily of homeschooled children of the Auburn Catholic Academy, resumed weekly rehearsals today after a summer hiatus. Our number has reached on all time high of fifteen children, ranging in ages from six to seventeen. Time was spent singing as a group, matching pitches, and brushing up on the Latin ordinary, including the Kyrie, the Sanctus, and the Agnus Dei. The plan is to introduce them to the Latin Gloria and yet another Kyrie, in addition to adding to their repertoire of standard chant hymns. Their voices are an inspiration at the 8:00 Sunday Mass, whether they are sitting with their families, or singing from the choir area, as was their privilege on two occasions thus far this year. Their tenacity is a blessing to us all, and a milestone in the effort to breath new life into our Catholic sacred music tradition.

With the Fall begins our preparations for the our first Sacred Music Workshop, February 21, 2004. It will be a one day workshop led by the Schola and under the guest direction of William Mahrt of Stanford University. Held at St. Michaels, it provides a practical introduction for directors of music, singers in parish choirs, parents who want their children to learn Latin chant, or anyone who is curious about the sound and solemnity of truly sacred music.
• Singing sessions on the essential Latin chants every Catholic should know
• Singing sessions on 16th century polyphony by Palestrina and others
• Singing sessions for children (age 6 and up) on chant basics
• Masses during which the Workshop Schola will sing what we've learned
• Lectures on the meaning of the Mass and Sacred Music
• Sheet music provided as part of registration
• Luncheon and all-day child care
The workshop runs from 9:00am to 6:00pm, with the option of coming early to hear the St. Cecilia Schola assist at the 8:00am Mass, or staying overnight to sing at Sunday's 8:00am Mass.
The price is $30 per adult (16 years and older) and $15 per child (or $30 for all children in one family. The registration form is online (also a permanent link on this page). Or you can email the president of the Schola.
