Order the materials featured at the Sacred Music Workshop.

The Liber Cantualis is available from the Oregon Catholic Press at a competitive price; they also provide excellent customer service. A Gregorian Chant Masterclass can be ordered directly from the Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, Connecticut.

Watch for additional resources coming soon.

The workshop was a glorious success! This very nice (and mostly accurate!) story ran on the front page of the Opelika-Auburn News. And here is a version in pdf that you can print.

Below are common questions about and objections to the use of Gregorian chant and polyphony in liturgy. We'll address these in a discussion forum at the Sacred Music Workshop next week.

Authority
  • Is this music even allowed anymore?
  • What about the impression that chant is outmoded?
  • Isn't this all a throwback to days before Vatican II?
  • What does the General Instruction on the Roman Missal say?
  • There are so many documents, so which ones should we follow?
Pedagogy
  • What is the best way to learn the basics?
  • How can I teach myself advanced material?
  • How much time should I expect to spend on learning a single chant?
  • Are we asking people to learn Latin?
  • Why not just sing chant in English?
Parish Life
  • We don't have any money!
  • Our parish has one Mass on Sunday, so there's no room!
  • Our hymnal is hopeless!
  • We don't have an organist!
  • What if people complain?
Strategy
  • I can't make a difference, so why should I try?
  • How can I convince my pastor, who is chant skeptic?
  • Can I start a group without a liturgical venue at which to sing?
  • What is the next step I should take to help revive sacred music?
  • How fast or slow should our choir go in integrating this tradition into parish life
Style
  • Why is chant so beautiful?
  • Must it be sung with a certain style and what is that style?
  • What about vibrato?
  • What is the relationship between polyphony and chant?
  • Can young people relate to this music?
  • Why must we never think of our contribution as a "performance"?
  • Is there a standard by which the appropriateness of music can be evaluated?
Liturgical
  • What about the question of mixing styles in liturgy?
  • What if the congregation isn't singing?
  • Must the chant be easy enough for everyone to sing?
  • What should we do about the Psalm?
  • Must we sing a communion hymn?
  • Are we permitted to do a polyphonic Sanctus?
  • How does chant affect what we sing at the rest of liturgy?
